Covenant

The binding promise God keeps even when you don't — from Eden to the new covenant sealed in Jesus' blood

Introduction

What makes a promise from God different from any promise a person could make you? A covenant is more than a promise — it's a binding relationship, sealed and guaranteed, where someone puts their own name on the line to keep it.

God has made covenants throughout Scripture, and in every one, He carries more of the weight than we do. The new covenant, sealed in Jesus' blood, is the clearest picture yet of a God who keeps His word even when we can't keep ours.

Scripture

Jeremiah 31:31–34

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant... I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Deuteronomy 7:9

Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him.

Luke 22:20

This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

Genesis 15:17–18

A smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces... In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram.

Translation note: Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (KJV). The King James Version is in the public domain.
