What Scripture does with suffering that doesn't make sense yet
Introduction
There is a kind of pain that prayer doesn't seem to reach. You ask, and nothing changes. You wait, and heaven stays quiet.
Scripture does not skip past that experience or scold anyone for having it. It gives them words for it — an entire vocabulary of honest complaint, spoken directly to God, preserved in the Bible on purpose.

This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
