Introduction

Rome isn't background scenery in the Gospels. A census moved Jesus' family to Bethlehem. Roman law decided who could and couldn't be executed. And a Roman governor's fear of his own emperor shaped the final hours of Jesus' life.

Scripture

John 18:31

Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death.

John 19:12

If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

Luke 2:1

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

Translation note: Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (KJV). The King James Version is in the public domain.
